Proud member of Bearskin Lake First Nation in Treaty 9, Garrett Ugray brings over 10 years of specialized expertise with a track record of success in Indigenous engagement, relations, complex multi-party project management (three or more parties), consensus building, negotiations and conflict resolution with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Foresty (MNRF) fulfilling the Crown’s Duty to Consult, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) working as an Indigenous Engagement Associate and later Manager of Nuclear Security and Emergency Preparedness. He was part of an award-winning site selection team that navigated the complex legal and political environment in northwestern Ontario to successfully execute a regional Indigenous engagement strategy to find informed and willing host communities with Ignace and Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation to store all of Canada’s used nuclear fuel underground in a deep geological repository.
He also has over 20 years of experience as a trainer (forest firefighting, MNRF Aboriginal Relations Trainer, NWMO cultural awareness trainer, nuclear security and emergency preparedness and de-escalation trainer), has been invited to speak overseas on challenges and opportunities in working with Indigenous communities in emergency response, and appeared on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) documentary series “Playing With Fire”. Garrett founded Ugray Consulting Limited with the hopes of helping to create more opportunities for Indigenous communities to enjoy transformational change for the positive with ethical and sustainable economic development.
Garrett collaborates with a carefully selected network of industry specialists, subject matter experts, including current and former Chiefs, Ministers, Elders, Knowledgeholders and government officials to help him orient both his own compass, and yours.
